How To Prosper During Dog Days
It’s been in the 90’s here in Colorado for weeks.
Although we don’t have the humidity of the eastern US,
it’s still darn hot! If you’re like me, you don’t feel
like doing much during the dog days of summer, despite
the fact that you probably have an air conditioned
office. It’s hard to get motivated. Tons of people are
still on vacation (not to mention whole countries, like
Italy!). School hasn’t quite started.
So what are hard-driving success-oriented business and
career people like us to do?
It’s interesting that people living in warmer parts of
the world tend to be less productive than those in
colder ones. They are also friendlier and happier. Makes
you think, doesn’t it? What does all our running around
get us? Well, seasonal periods like the dog days of
summer help us to balance out and stay both productive
and happy. But only IF we honor them.
One of the things I help my clients learn is to work
with cycles. By harnessing the wisdom of natural cycles,
we will actually be both more productive and happier.
How is this possible? By remembering that “to everything
there is a season and a time to every purpose.”
The dog days of August are a time to rest, reflect,
rejuvenate and prepare for the busy-ness of the fall. If
you muscle on through it without any adjustment to your
pace, the nature that is part of your DNA will sooner or
later take you down and force you to rest anyway (think:
bad moods, exhaustion, maybe even nervous breakdown or
heart attack).
So you know what? I’m going to take a cue from one of my
major teachers, my dog Jack (that’s him in the photo)
and relax more right now. I’m not going to push so hard
and I’m going to trust everything will happen at the
right time and be in the moment now. What else is there,
really?
