When Was Your Last Vacation?

When was the last time you took a vacation? I hope it was in the past 6 months, but if not, you’re not alone. According to an article in Hope Magazine, 26% of Americans don’t take all their vacation days because they have too much work to do.

If taking a full week or two is out of the question right now, I encourage you to take a long weekend. A few good days away from it all can prevent burn out and restore your positive frame of mind. However, most people need a solid vacation to truly recharge their batteries. My personal goal is one week per quarter, and while I’m not quite there yet, I am committed to achieving it.

Did you know that 63% of Americans work over 40 hours per week? The average American family works four months more per year than 25 years ago. Some of my Ordinary Brilliance subscribers live in countries where people may not be so pressed for time, but unfortunately this trend is spreading globally.

So if you’re suffering from “Vacation Deficit Disorder” (a term someone has actually coined!), do yourself a favor. Act now to ignite your optimism, rejuvenate your relationships, recharge your body and your emotions and become one of those people we look to as healthy, happy individuals. (Yes, there are some!)

Either by yourself or with your spouse, partner or a close friend, get out your calendar and plan at least two vacations in the coming year. Clear it with your boss, if you have one, or if you’re self-employed, write out your commitment, sign in blood (just kidding) and exchange with your partner or someone you trust.

I recently received this email from a colleague who in the past six months started up a  new business: “The vacation was amazing. I can’t wait to go on another cruise. I never expected it to be as wonderful as it was. Everyone should try it. We are planning another group cruise for next year already.”

Whether a great vacation for you is a cruise, a week alone in a cabin in the woods, bungee jumping off Mexican cliffs, visiting historic sites, taking in great museums, or something else, plan something now!
